The information technology revolution is not going to go away, and information technology exploding through the continuum of health care. Its impact on the way physical therapists provide care will completely change physical therapy field. The future for physical therapists will bleak if there is a variety of unregulated, complicated, and disparate software programs that collects clinical information that cannot be shared, analyzed, nor managed. The technology is available that can establish large data banks and national benchmarks for diagnostic groups pertaining to the duration, frequency, interventions, and outcomes of physical therapy services. We must, in a unified professional voice, take the initiative and lead physical therapists in what will inevitably be our destiny: computerized reporting and data collection.
